Henry McKenna Single Barrel is a ten-year-old, Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky straight bourbon, drawn from individual barrels and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV), the only extra-aged Bottled-in-Bond single barrel bourbon.
It is named for Henry McKenna, the Irish immigrant who adapted his family's whiskey recipe to work with the grains he found in Kentucky. Made by Heaven Hill in Bardstown, it is one of the longest-aged Bottled-in-Bond whiskeys available, resting in new charred American oak through 40 Kentucky seasons.
To be labelled Bottled in Bond, a whiskey must be the product of one distillation season and one distiller at a single distillery, aged in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision for at least four years, and bottled at exactly 100 proof. Henry McKenna far exceeds that with its ten-year age statement, and each barrel is selected individually.
In the glass it is a warm golden amber. The nose offers vanilla, caramel, oak and a light herbaceous note; the palate brings smooth oak, sharp spices, honey and sweetness, and the finish is long, sweet and spicy. Critics agree it is a perfectly balanced bourbon and a fine gift.
Enjoy it neat or with a single cube of ice.
