Hillrock Double Cask Rye is a 100% rye whiskey from Hillrock Estate Distillery in Ancram, in New York's Hudson Valley, distilled and aged entirely on the estate and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Hillrock is a field-to-glass distillery: it grows its own grain on its Hudson Valley estate and malts it in its own on-site malt house before distilling. The Double Cask Rye is matured in more than one type of cask, building depth and complexity before bottling.
The nose brings sour brown bread, wheatgrass, brown sugar, pine and buttered toast over rye spice, caramel and oak. The palate opens sweet with figs and candied ginger, moving through butterscotch, herbal notes and peppery rye over vanilla and toasted oak. The finish is warm, with cinnamon and charred oak and a tingle of rye spice in the background.
The heavy square decanter, hand-labelled with the Hillrock crest, makes it a handsome gift for any rye lover.
Enjoy it neat, over a large ice cube or in a Manhattan.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
