Hirsch The Single Barrel is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey bottled from one barrel at cask strength, listed at 64% ABV, without chill filtration.
The first release, in 2021, was aged at least six years in new American oak in Bardstown, Kentucky, with a mash bill of 72% corn, 13% rye and 15% malted barley.
Proof and flavour vary from barrel to barrel, and each label records its barrel number, bottle and proof by hand.
Hirsch Selected Whiskeys sources exceptional barrels from several distilleries, not bound to one distillery or mash bill.
The clean, square bottle with its black-and-cream label is a handsome gift, and a cask-strength single barrel is a treat for the serious bourbon drinker.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
