Hogback Distillery Straight Rye is a Colorado straight rye whiskey from Boulder, made from a 95% rye mash bill, aged at least four years and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Hogback Distillery makes only whiskies, from a sweet, easy high-wheat bourbon to a heavy-hitting four-grain cask strength and a peat-smoked American single malt. Its whiskeys reflect founder Graeme Wallace's combination of traditional Scottish whisky-making expertise and American craft distilling, and the distillery runs a tasting room and bottle shop in Estes Park, Colorado.
Rye whiskies present considerably more diversity in flavor than bourbons, and Hogback's is no exception. Its 95% rye whiskey is lighter than many other ryes but still has all the characteristics associated with a rye: complex and enticing, a well-made, dependable choice with real character.
The nose is floral and soft, grassy and sweet, with plenty of green apple, baking spice and some oak. On the palate, classic rye spice meets vanilla, caramel and toasted oak with a gentle herbal character, and the finish lingers with sweet orange spice, pepper and oak.
Enjoy it neat, with a splash of water, or in classic cocktails such as a Manhattan, a Sazerac or an Old Fashioned.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
