Home Base Bourbon is a balanced, delicate, grain-forward bourbon from Home Base Spirits of Berkeley, California, made with sustainably grown corn, malted wheat and lots of malted barley. This is Batch 29, a three-year-old bourbon bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).
Home Base was founded by twins Alexandra and Samantha Blatteis, born and raised in Oakland, their home base. Inspired in 2011 by a distillery that treated whiskey as an agricultural product, they spent years researching local distilleries and small family farms, took distilling courses and founded a women's whiskey club before launching Home Base Spirits in 2015. All their products are sustainably made and bottled at their headquarters in Berkeley.
The bourbon ages in new American oak barrels at char 4. Its high malt content brings honey, maple and nut, which complement the caramel, toffee and vanilla typical of bourbon. It is released in small batches, and it was a 2023 Good Food Award finalist.
Its colorful, modern label makes a cheerful gift.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
