Hooten Young 15 Year Old Barrel Proof is an American whiskey bottled straight from the cask at 125 proof (62.5% ABV), one of the oldest and strongest expressions from the veteran-founded Hooten Young brand.
The whiskey was distilled in Indiana from a mash of 99% corn and 1% barley and aged for 15 years in second-fill charred American oak barrels. The release commemorated the 28th anniversary of the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, honouring the brand's military roots.
The nose offers maple, vanilla and brown sugar. The palate brings sweet corn, caramel, baked apple and gentle oak spice, and the finish is warm with lingering sweetness. For its strength, it drinks surprisingly light.

Barrel proof means the whiskey goes into the bottle at the strength it reached in the cask, with no water added. After fifteen years in oak, much of the spirit's water and alcohol have evaporated through the wood, concentrating its flavour and texture.
A mash of almost entirely corn gives a naturally sweet, rich spirit, and second-fill barrels, which have already held whiskey once, impart their oak more gently than new barrels. That combination allows a long ageing period without the wood taking over, so the corn sweetness carries through into a mature, well-rounded whiskey. A few drops of water open up the aromas and soften the heat.
