J. Rieger & Co. Premium Wheat Vodka is a 100% wheat vodka from Kansas City, Missouri, given a final distillation in a 750-gallon copper pot still and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
J. Rieger & Co. was founded in 1887 by Austrian immigrant Jacob Rieger and became key to the early development of Kansas City, growing into the largest mail-order whiskey business in the world until Prohibition shut it down. A century later, the family-owned distillery was revived by a team of future-focused distillers, including the founder's great-great-great-grandson, and it was the first legal distillery in Kansas City since Prohibition.
The vodka starts from a neutral grain spirit distilled from 100% wheat. Instead of simply cutting it down to proof, the team re-distills it in Kansas City under Head Distiller Nathan Perry in their 750-gallon copper Vendome pot still, which came online in 2015. A percentage is lost by cutting the heads and tails, but the result is a purer spirit with an exceptionally clean flavor profile. It is then charcoal filtered.
The copper pot still rounds out the spirit while giving it a full-bodied mouthfeel: clean and smooth, with a full body and rich texture, a delicate, subtle nose and a big, round palate with soft sweetness from the wheat.
Made for mixing in spirit-forward cocktails, it shines in a Martini, a Vodka Gimlet or a Moscow Mule, and it is smooth enough to sip neat.
