Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2021 is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot and 1% Malbec, bottled at 14.5% ABV.
It spent 16 months in oak, 48% of it new, with the rest in older French and American barrels.
It shows ripe currant, tobacco, leather, pencil shavings and dark chocolate, with violet, dark fruit, baking spice and dried herbs.
James Suckling scored it 94 points, and Vinous gave it 93.
Joseph Phelps, founded in 1973, is one of Napa's landmark estates and the maker of Insignia. Its Napa Valley Cabernet offers the house style at a more approachable price and will drink well for the next 10 to 15 years.
Good wine rewards a little care in serving. Whites and rosés show best chilled to around 45 to 50°F, while reds are at their most expressive slightly below room temperature, around 60 to 65°F. Opening the bottle and letting it breathe for a few minutes, or pouring it into a decanter, helps the aromas open up.
