Journeyman Featherbone is a certified organic bourbon whiskey distilled at Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Featherbone is named after the innovative product once manufactured in the distillery's building a century ago, when manufacturing in Michigan was synonymous with American made. The Featherbone was a revolutionary product, used in corsets and buggy whips, created and manufactured in Three Oaks by E.K. Warren, a staunch prohibitionist. Journeyman finds it ironic to be operating a grain-to-bottle distillery in this once dry community, and hopes E.K. would see them carrying the torch for manufacturing into the 21st century. The certified organic mash offers a lot of Midwest corn and a little of everything else, including Michigan wheat, rye and malted barley.
The wheat gives Featherbone a softer, rounder profile than rye-heavy bourbons, with caramel, nuttiness and baking spice; sweet vanilla and chocolate arrive first on the nose, followed by a distinct peanut butter note.
The vintage apothecary-style bottle makes it a characterful gift.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
Organic grains are grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
A splash of water brings out the vanilla.
It makes a nutty twist on an Old Fashioned.
