Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2023 Edition is the annual sherry-matured limited release from Islay's farm distillery, matured entirely in oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 46% ABV without chill filtration or added colour.
Loch Gorm is named after Islay's largest freshwater loch, which neighbours the distillery, and the dark, murky colour of its water is reflected in the rich coppery tones of the whisky. Kilchoman sources every Loch Gorm cask from a single bodega, José Miguel Martín, selecting a combination of oloroso butts and hogsheads for two styles of maturation. The 2023 Edition is a vatting of just 22 casks distilled in 2013, 2014 and 2015, peated to around 50 ppm.
The ex-oloroso casks impart heavy sherry notes, spicy dark chocolate, rich fruit and burnt sugar, balanced by Kilchoman's peat smoke and citrus. The nose offers cacao with an essence of leather, black cherry and light smoke. The palate brings roasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate and roasted dark fruits, giving way to light ashy peat smoke, and the finish is balanced and long, with fresh Islay sea breeze.
Presented in Kilchoman's black gift box, it makes a superb gift for peated sherry cask lovers.
