Kings County Blended Bourbon is a thoughtful revival of an all-but-lost category of American whiskey from New York City's oldest operating whiskey distillery, aged two to four years and bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).
Blended bourbon is an obscure category that must be at least 51% straight bourbon. Kings County's is a blend of its own in-house, pot-distilled straight whiskeys: bourbon, corn whiskey and other barrels the team finds, to make an approachable, standard-proof bourbon suitable for highballs or boilermakers. It is light enough to enjoy whenever the occasion calls for whiskey, yet complex enough for daily sipping.
Kings County Distillery, founded in 2010, was the first whiskey distillery in New York City since Prohibition. It uses New York grain and traditional distilling equipment in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, steps from the former waterfront distillery district and the site of the 1860s Brooklyn Whiskey Wars, and every drop it sells is made in Brooklyn.
A true taste of Brooklyn, it makes a great gift for city whiskey fans.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
Pot distillation, used at Kings County, is a slower, batch-by-batch method that keeps more of the grain's character in the spirit than continuous column stills.
The Brooklyn Whiskey Wars of the 1860s saw federal agents raid illegal distilleries along the Brooklyn waterfront to collect unpaid whiskey taxes.
