La Gritona Reposado is an additive-free tequila made by Melly Barajas and her team of women at a small distillery in Valle de Guadalupe, in the Jalisco highlands. It is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Melly Barajas built the operation from the ground up, and the distillery is run entirely by women. La Gritona means the shouting woman, a nod to the strong, independent character of the brand. The reposado is the only expression it makes, keeping all of the team's focus on one tequila.
Only mature agaves, typically eight to ten years old, are used, grown in the iron-rich red soils of the highlands. The piñas are steam-cooked, and the tequila rests in American oak. The style emphasizes fresh agave character rather than the sweeter, heavily oaked profile of many reposados, with caramelized fruit, ginger and pepper.
Its green bottle, with the brand embossed in the glass, makes a distinctive gift.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
