La Venenosa Puntas is a high-proof raicilla from the mountains of Jalisco, made from Maximiliana agave and bottled at 62.4% ABV. Puntas are the first, strongest part of the heart of the distillation, here kept apart and bottled on their own.
Raicilla is the traditional agave spirit of western Jalisco, made in small batches in remote mountain villages. La Venenosa works with individual raicilleros and identifies each bottle by its maker and place; this Puntas comes from Jacales, Jalisco, and is now made by Esteban Morales in Mascota. Because each batch is small, the strength varies slightly from bottle to bottle.
Despite its strength, it is elegant, subtle and complex. Expect cooked agave, lavender and ripe pear on the nose, with a crisp, clean palate of floral notes, sweet mint, tropical fruit, citrus peel and fresh herbs, leading to a spicy, long finish with a sweet, lightly citrus aftertaste.
The tall bottle with its purple label and spiral emblem is a prized find for agave enthusiasts.
Sip it slowly from a copita, a little at a time.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
