La Venenosa Sierra Occidental is a raicilla made by maestro tabernero Rubén Peña Fuentes in the mountains of Mascota, Jalisco, at about 1,500 meters, bottled at 42% ABV.
It is made from Agave maximiliana, also called lechuguilla, which Peña grows from seed.
The agave is roasted in an adobe oven with black oak, fermented in 200-liter vats and single distilled in a hybrid Filipino-Arabic still.
La Venenosa was founded by Chef Esteban Morales, who travelled across Jalisco to find the finest raicilla makers in each region.
Its black label with the white spiral is a mark of one of raicilla's most respected producers.
