Laphroaig Elements L1.0 is the first release in Laphroaig's Elements series, an experimental line exploring how mashing and fermentation shape flavour. Matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled without chill filtration at 58.6% ABV, it was released in October 2023.
Laphroaig normally runs semi-cloudy wort, but for L1.0 the distillery blended in cloudy wort, which carries more solids from the mash, in a 50/50 mix for bigger, heavier flavours and stronger phenolic notes. It also revived an 8.5-tonne mash tun alongside its two 5.5-tonne tuns, making the whisky in two sizes of mash tun with two types of wort.
The nose brings fresh sea salt and smoky bacon, with strawberry jam, charred pineapple and bonfire embers. The palate is spicy and peppery, with tropical fruit, cloves and tangy liquorice, and the finish is warming and smoky, sweet, drying and long, with Laphroaig's famous peat.
Presented in a white Elements gift box, it is a collectable first edition for Laphroaig fans.

Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years in oak casks, and any age statement on the label refers to the youngest whisky in the bottle.
