Laws Four Grain Straight Bourbon Cask Strength, Batch C-22, is a Colorado straight bourbon made from corn and heirloom wheat, rye and malted barley, bottled at cask strength; this batch is 114.4 proof (57.2% ABV).
Laws' Four Grain story starts at two Colorado family farms that grow the corn and heirloom varietals of wheat, barley and rye. A labour-intensive cooking technique brings each grain's individual character to life, while open-air sour mash fermentation adds soulful complexity. The mash bill is 60% corn, 20% heirloom wheat, 10% heirloom rye and 10% heirloom malted barley, aged three years or more in new 53-gallon charred oak barrels, influenced by Colorado's high-elevation climate. For the cask strength release, barrels with noteworthy character and concentrated flavour are bottled without dilution.
Every cask strength batch has its own character. The Four Grain is known for orange blossom, black tea, honey and dusty pepper on the nose, then pekoe tea, orange peel, cinnamon and vanilla custard, with hints of sweet tobacco and spice leading to a rich, dry finish.
A batch-numbered Colorado bourbon, it makes a fine gift for bourbon explorers.
Sip it neat, then add water a few drops at a time.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
