Laws San Luis Valley Straight Rye is a terroir-driven, unapologetic rye whiskey made from 100% heirloom rye grown 7,500 feet above sea level in Colorado's San Luis Valley, aged four-plus years and bottled at 95 proof (47.5% ABV).
The Cody family has been cultivating this low-yield, semi-wild rye grain in the San Luis Valley since the 1930s, and Laws fell in love with how it ferments and distils. The whiskey is made by Laws Whiskey House in Denver using a labour-intensive open-air, on-grain sour mash process, then aged in new 53-gallon charred oak barrels. It is luxurious in texture and generous in perfume.
The nose is floral and perfumed, with baking spice and orange oil. Flavours of black tea, sweet mint, salted toffee, orange peel and stewed fig follow, finishing with a radiant green peppercorn spice.
A Colorado flagship rye, it makes a fine gift for rye lovers.
Enjoy it neat or in a Manhattan.
