Lobos 1707 Joven is a 100% blue Weber agave tequila, a blend of blanco with a measure of the brand's reposado, carbon filtered and then finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks using the solera method, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Lobos 1707 is led by founder and chief creative officer Diego Osorio and co-founded by LeBron James. The brand marries traditions from Mexico and Spain: one of Osorio's ancestors, who shared his name, sailed from Spain to Mexico in the 16th century with oak barrels that gave the local spirit a smoother finish, a story that inspired the sherry-cask finish. The tequila is a tribute to a centuries-old family recipe.
It is made at Compañía Tequilera de Arandas (NOM 1460) in the highlands of Jalisco. The agave is roasted and twice distilled into a blanco, which is blended with a measure of Lobos reposado, carbon filtered, and then finished in PX sherry casks using the solera system, the method used for Spanish sherry.
The result is a blanco-style tequila a little richer than the norm: bright, floral and grassy agave on the nose, pepper on the palate, and an almost buttery finish with a touch of sherry sweetness. It is additive-free.
The PX finish makes it more complex than a standard blanco, and it elevates a Margarita; it is equally good neat or on the rocks.
