Loch & Union Barley Gin is a grain-to-glass gin distilled from a mash of 100% malted barley in Napa Valley, California, bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).
Rather than starting from neutral spirits, Loch & Union distills its barley mash in a similar way to its single malt whisky and uses that spirit as the base for the gin. The distillery, in Napa Valley's American Canyon, was co-founded by Master Distiller Colin Baker, who learned distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, and Matthew Meyer. All of their spirits are made from scratch, from grain to glass, in custom-made copper stills, and malt whisky is the distillery's underlying ambition. The botanicals include juniper, angelica, chamomile and coriander.
Red fruit and butterscotch notes from the unaged malt spirit meld with the piney, deeply warming flavors of the botanicals, creating a gin that will challenge your previous notions of what a gin can be.
Its heavy, embossed bottle makes it a great gift for gin and whisky fans alike.
Most gins start from neutral grain spirit, so a malt base gives this one far more texture.
Chamomile adds a soft floral note to the juniper.
Serve it with tonic and a twist of orange to bring out the red fruit.
It makes a rich Martini with a lemon twist.
Whisky drinkers often find barley gin a natural bridge into gin.
A large ice cube is all it needs for slow sipping.
Its grain character also shines in a Tom Collins.
The heavy embossed bottle looks great on any bar.
