Lock Stock & Barrel Vatted Straight Rye is a blend of hand-selected straight rye whiskeys from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Alberta, Canada, aged from 4 to 18 years around a nine-year-old heart and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).
Vatted refers to the traditional practice of marrying multiple mature whiskeys together until they reach balance, depth and harmony. Lock Stock & Barrel, from the Cooper Spirits Co., is known for its long-aged, 100% rye straight ryes, and this release brings that experience to a multi-origin blend.
It is full-bodied, built around maple, toffee, mace, clove, tobacco, dried fruit, rye spice, oak and warm pepper.
A layered, collectible rye, it makes a fine gift for rye fans.
Sip it neat, or use it in a Manhattan or Sazerac.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
Straight rye whiskey must be made from a mash of at least 51% rye, aged at least two years in new charred oak and bottled with nothing added but water; Canadian rye follows its own rules, which is part of what makes a cross-border vatting unusual.
Each rye region brings a different accent: Kentucky and Indiana ryes tend toward spice and herbal mint, while long-aged Canadian ryes add depth and softness.
At 100 proof the blend carries good weight; a few drops of water open up the fruit and spice.
