Los Siete Misterios Doba-Yej is an artisanal joven mezcal from Oaxaca made from 100% Espadín agave, bright, floral and citrusy with gentle smoke, bottled at 88 proof (44% ABV).
Siete Misterios, meaning seven mysteries, works with individual mezcaleros across Oaxaca to bottle traditional, small-batch mezcals, presented in tall bottles with the brand's bold black-and-white illustrations. Doba-Yej is Zapotec for the Espadín agave, and it is the house's approachable everyday mezcal.
Each batch is made by a mezcalero working in the traditional way, roasting the Espadín, then fermenting and distilling it in small batches; batches have come from villages including Santiago Matatlán and San Luis del Río, so each bottling carries a little of its own terroir. It has earned up to 95 points from Falstaff.
Fresh and complex on the nose, it shows roasted agave, tropical fruit and gentle smoke with notes of citrus and fresh herbs. The palate is bright and floral with beautifully balanced citrus, a subtle sweetness and a touch of spice reminiscent of jalapeño, and the finish is medium-long, warming, smoky and slightly salty.
It is perfect neat from a copita, and bright enough for cocktails: try it in a mezcal Margarita, a Paloma or a mezcal Negroni.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
