Los Siete Misterios Espadín is a joven mezcal from Sola de Vega, Oaxaca, double distilled in clay pots and bottled at 49.5% ABV; this is the 2023 bottling.
The Espadín Clay Pot Mezcal was Los Siete Misterios' first product. After learning from maestros mezcaleros across Mexico, the team built the most traditional production process they could. They noticed that distillates in Sola de Vega had a sweeter and spicier character than those of other villages, so they chose to make their own mezcal there, following a from-seed-to-bottle concept. The agave, Agave angustifolia Haw, is cooked in an earth oven using wood and river stones, and the mezcal is distilled twice in clay pot stills.
It displays rich minerality, with notes of avocado leaf, fresh herbs, flowers and citrus.
Its illustrated label makes it a fine gift for mezcal lovers.
Sip it slowly from a copita at room temperature.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
