Los Siete Misterios Espadín-Tepeztate Ensamble is an artisanal mezcal from San Dionisio, Oaxaca, blending cultivated Espadín with wild Tepeztate, distilled in copper and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV) from a 2021 batch.
Los Siete Misterios was founded in 2010 by Eduardo and Julio Mestres, who spent decades sampling mezcal in villages across Mexico before partnering with local maestros mezcaleros and their families and building their own distillery. Their mission is to preserve the passion, traditions and culture of mezcal while stimulating the micro-economies of the rural communities that make it. This ensamble lets two agaves share the spotlight: fast-growing Espadín and wild Tepeztate, the cliff-dwelling maguey that can spend decades maturing before harvest. The agave is roasted in an earthen oven and distilled in a copper alembic.
Complex, lightly smoky and mineral, it pairs the sweet, round character of Espadín with the crisp vegetal and mineral notes of Tepeztate, with bold herbal notes and a smooth, smoky finish.
The skull-and-sombrero label makes it a collectible gift for mezcal lovers.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
