Los Vecinos del Campo Ensamble No. 1 is a small-batch mezcal artesanal joven from the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).

It is crafted by a collective of 10 master mezcaleros, ten families who make up the producers of the brand, in a project led by Carmen Villarreal of Casa San Matías in collaboration with Sazerac. The blend is 90% maguey Espadín with 5% each of maguey Barril and Madrecuishe.

Using locally grown, hand-harvested agave, the hearts slow roast underground for days to build a sultry, smoky sweetness. The piñas are crushed with a stone molino, naturally fermented in wooden vats and double distilled in a copper pot still. The bouquet shows chamomile, dill pickle and roasted agave, with tasting notes of black pepper, honey and soy sauce.

The colorful woven-pattern label makes it a vibrant gift.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.

Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
