Los Vecinos del Campo Tobalá is a joven mezcal artesanal from Oaxaca made from maguey tobalá, the small, prized agave often called the king of mezcals, bottled at 44% ABV.

Los Vecinos del Campo uses locally grown, hand-harvested agave. The agave hearts are slow roasted underground for days to reach a sultry, smoky sweetness, crushed by a stone molino, naturally fermented in wooden vats and double distilled in a copper pot still.

It has earthy aromas with floral undertones and notes of citrus zest on the nose. The palate brings sweetness followed by tropical fruits like mango and apple, with a spiced finish.

With its colourful label, it makes a fine gift for mezcal lovers.

Sip it slowly from a copita at room temperature.

Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.

Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.

Tobalá, Agave potatorum, is a small agave that grows wild in rocky highland terrain and takes many years to mature, yielding little sugar per plant, which makes its mezcal scarce and prized.

Mezcal artesanal allows copper stills alongside traditional tools such as underground pit ovens and stone mills, keeping the hand-made character of the spirit.

A joven mezcal is bottled unaged, so the agave and the roast come through without the influence of oak.

Oaxaca is the heartland of mezcal, home to most of the category's producers and to a huge diversity of agaves.

Sipping from a copita, a small shallow cup, lets the aromas open gradually.
