Louis Latour Gevrey-Chambertin 2020 is a village red Burgundy made from Pinot Noir in Gevrey-Chambertin, the Côte de Nuits commune famed for powerful, structured reds, bottled at 14% ABV.
It shows a deep ruby colour with a bouquet of underbrush and licorice.
The round palate has silky tannins and notes of mocha, licorice, black fruit and savoury spice, with rustic, earthy touches.
James Suckling scored it 92 points, praising its fruit, gentle tannins and quite dry finish.
Gevrey-Chambertin is home to nine grand crus, including Chambertin itself, and its village wines offer a taste of that style at a more approachable price. This 2020 is a fine Burgundy for a roast or a special dinner.
Good wine rewards a little care in serving. Whites and rosés show best chilled to around 45 to 50°F, while reds are at their most expressive slightly below room temperature, around 60 to 65°F. Opening the bottle and letting it breathe for a few minutes, or pouring it into a decanter, helps the aromas open up.
