Low Gap Old Fussbudget is an 8-year-old cask-strength bourbon distilled in Mendocino County, California, by master distiller Crispin Cain. Aged eight full years in new charred American oak, it is bottled uncut at 118 proof.
Low Gap is made in the historic Germain-Robin facility, where Crispin Cain distils on an antique cognac still, bringing a brandy-maker's precision to American whiskey. Its mash bill of corn, malted barley and malted rye is unusual for bourbon, and the result has won top honours, including Best Whiskey in Show at the New Orleans Spirits Competition.
Eight full years in new charred oak give it the depth and structure of a well-aged bourbon, bottled at full strength without dilution.
The simple, elegant bottle with its white label makes it a fine gift for collectors of craft American whiskey.
Add a few drops of water to open up the fruit and spice.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
Mendocino County, better known for its vineyards, has become one of California's most interesting places for whiskey, and distilling on an alembic still built for cognac gives a richer, more textured spirit than a typical column still. Cask strength means nothing is added before bottling, so you can add water to taste and discover how the whiskey changes as it opens.
