Luxardo Sour Cherry Gin is an infusion of Luxardo's traditional dry gin distillate with the family's proprietary marasca cherry juice, deep red in color and bottled at 75 proof (37.5% ABV).
The Luxardo family has been producing juniper-based distillate since 1833 and is best known around the world for its Maraschino liqueur, made from the marasca cherry. Sour Cherry Gin revives the family's "Ginepro di Dalmazia" gin recipe from the early 1900s, and each bottle wears an artisanal label designed to reflect 19th-century Italy. It is made at the Luxardo distillery in Torreglia, in the Veneto.
The base is a dry gin with nine exotic botanicals, including iris, licorice, cinnamon, cinchona and bitter orange peel. The botanicals infuse in alcohol for 24 hours in traditional copper pot stills before distillation. After a total of nineteen days resting in stainless steel tanks, the distillate is infused with Luxardo marasca cherry juice, then filtered and lightly sweetened.
Deep red in color, it has a pungent marasca cherry aroma with intense juniper notes. The initial taste is typical of gin, firm and dry, with spice and a long-lasting sour cherry aftertaste. The bold botanicals give a bright, rich, sour taste that keeps the strong juniper and spice of the gin. Not to be mistaken for a sloe gin, it is higher in proof and built on a juniper-forward structure.
