Malahat Cabernet Barrel Aged Rum is a pot-distilled, molasses-based rum from San Diego, aged more than two years in Napa and Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon barrels and bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).
Malahat Spirits Co. is San Diego's own rum and whiskey distillery, founded by Tony Grillo, Ken Lee and Tom Bleakley. The company is named after the Malahat, a legendary Prohibition-era rum-running schooner, and the partners blend experimentation and innovation with traditional techniques. Everything is handcrafted at the distillery from natural ingredients.
The base is the same pot-distilled rum used for Malahat's unaged rum, laid down in used cabernet barrels from two of California's great wine valleys. The rum is fragrant, with hints of vanilla and fruit from the wine barrels, and it has a deep, dark color with a light body. The palate is clean and elegant with cabernet notes, well balanced and smooth from start to finish. It won a Double Gold medal from the American Distilling Institute in 2016.
The rounded jug-style bottle with its schooner label makes it a fun gift for rum and wine lovers alike.
Aged rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world, shaped by the sugarcane, the still and the warm climates where it matures, which speed up the interaction between spirit and wood.
