Marcado 28 Reposado is an additive-free 100% blue Weber agave tequila from the Highlands of Jalisco, rested eight months in American oak and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Marcado 28 was co-founded by Top Chef winner Michael Voltaggio and 10th-generation distiller Bruno Barba, and it is produced at the Auténtica Tequilera distillery (NOM 1502). It defies the trend of fast, mass-produced tequila: hand-selected Highland agaves are slow-roasted in brick ovens to extract their natural sweetness, and the reposado rests eight months in American oak, well beyond the minimum, giving it a rich, dark golden color while keeping a solid agave presence. Its label, by tattoo artist El Sando, depicts Mayahuel, the Aztec goddess of agave.
The nose brings caramelized agave, honey and a hint of chili spice, with caramel, vanilla, oak and herbs. The palate shows caramel, oak, faint toffee, black pepper and warm spice, finishing with honey and cinnamon; clean, balanced and easy drinking.
The vivid Mayahuel artwork makes it a striking gift.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
