Merlet VS is a light, approachable cognac from the Merlet family of Saint-Sauvant, blended mostly from Fins Bois eaux-de-vie with Bons Bois and a little Petite Champagne, aged at least two years and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Merlet & Fils is based in the village of Saint-Sauvant, in the heart of the Cognac region. For over 160 years the family distilled eaux-de-vie under contract for some of the largest cognac houses in France, before launching its own branded cognac in 2010.
For Merlet VS, Gilles Merlet and his sons select and blend eaux-de-vie from different regions of the cognac appellation to ensure consistent quality. Aged for at least two years, the eaux-de-vie chosen are light and easy to approach, mostly from the Fins Bois cru but also from Bons Bois and a little Petite Champagne; depending on the blend, other crus distilled by Merlet can be called upon.
Straw-yellow in the glass, it shows delicate notes dominated by the eaux-de-vie, with subtle vanilla and pear on the nose. The palate is light, slightly woody and delicately fruity, and the finish is long and fruity.
A bright, versatile VS, it is made for cocktails: mix a Sidecar, a French 75 or a cognac and tonic with an orange twist, or sip it over ice.
Cognac must be made from white grapes grown in the Cognac region of France, double distilled in copper pot stills and aged in French oak, with age categories such as VSOP and XO describing the minimum age of the youngest brandy in the blend.
