Mermaid Gin is the signature small-batch gin of the Isle of Wight Distillery, hand-crafted from ten ethically sourced botanicals led by wild-foraged rock samphire, and bottled at 84 proof (42% ABV).
The Isle of Wight Distillery has been hand-crafting gin on the Isle of Wight, off England's south coast, since 2014, and it was the first distillery on the island. Mermaid Gin is its signature: ten ethically sourced botanicals, some of them grown or foraged on the island itself. Its name was inspired by its lead botanical, rock samphire, known locally as "mermaid's kiss", an aromatic succulent that clings to the island's cliffs and marks the high tide line on its beaches.
The recipe brings together rock samphire, Boadicea hops, juniper, organic lemon zest, English coriander, elderflower, grains of paradise, orris root, angelica root and liquorice root. Fresh organic lemon zest and the peppery notes of grains of paradise lead, with a hint of sea air from the fragrant rock samphire.
On the palate, bright lemon zest and crisp juniper open up before a savory, almost mineral quality from the samphire arrives mid-palate. The texture is smooth and medium-bodied, and the Boadicea hops add a subtle earthy bitterness that balances the citrus. It is clean, refreshing and slightly savory: a contemporary London Dry with a coastal soul.
Mermaid Gin comes in an eco-friendly bottle with a textured, scale-like design, which has won Best Eco-Packaging from the American Distilling Institute, and the gin itself has taken a first place at the International Wine & Spirit Competition.
