Mezcal Unión Uno is a joven mezcal from San Baltazar Guelavila, Oaxaca, handcrafted from a blend of farm-grown Espadín and wild Cirial agaves and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Uno was the first expression created in the Mezcal Unión line, a mezcal that represents Mexico's values, cultures and traditions. Unión works with a network of more than 50 families of mezcaleros throughout Oaxaca, a cooperative structure designed to preserve traditional techniques while supporting sustainable livelihoods, and its name and philosophy grew out of that unity.
The agaves, matured eight to fourteen years, are harvested, cut and roasted for four days, then crushed by tahona, fermented, double distilled in copper pot stills and expertly blended. The Cirial, a wild agave, adds soft fruit notes and body not often found in young mezcals, while the smoke is kept understated to let the fruit shine.
On the nose come pear, green applewood, smoke and wet soil. The palate brings Encino oak firewood, pear, green apple and citrus, with the sweetness of Espadín evolving into citrus and herbal tones from the Cirial and a clean finish. It has earned 92 points.
Widely popular in Mexico and the US as a go-to cocktail mezcal, it is best enjoyed in a Mezcal Paloma, and equally good in a Mezcal Margarita or sipped neat with orange slices.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
