Mezcal Vago Espadín by Joel Barriga is a bright, fruit-forward artisanal joven mezcal from Hacienda Tapanala in Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV).
Joel Barriga is a third-generation distiller who produces his mezcal in copper pot stills on a remote oasis atop a high, arid plateau in the Sierra Sur, an hour from fellow Vago mezcalero Aquilino García. He uses cultivated Espadín agave aged 8 to 10 years, the genetic mother of tequila's Blue Weber, grinds it with a stone tahona, ferments in pine wood for one to three days dry and three to four days wet with river water, and double distills in 250-liter copper stills.
Don Joel takes a slightly deeper distillation cut, producing a rich profile and one of the brightest, most fruit-forward mezcals in Vago's lineup. It is very easy drinking, with a subtle smokiness that coats the palate and a hint of black pepper.
The yellow label makes it a standout gift for mezcal fans.
Mezcal is made by roasting agave hearts, traditionally in earthen pits, then crushing, fermenting and distilling them, a process that gives the spirit its characteristic smoky depth. Each agave variety and each village brings its own character, which is why enthusiasts love exploring small-batch bottlings.
Mezcal and other agave spirits are traditionally sipped from a copita or a small clay cup, in small sips, often alongside orange slices dusted with sal de gusano. Many are made in tiny batches by individual families, so each bottle is a snapshot of a particular place, agave and season.
