Mortlach 30 Year Old Midnight Malt is the pinnacle of the Mortlach range: a rich, after-dark single malt released once a year in a run of only 350 bottles. Three decades in oak and an unusual trio of finishing casks give it a depth that has made it one of the most talked-about releases from Speyside.
Mortlach is a Dufftown distillery prized for a rich, weighty house style, and Midnight Malt leans fully into that character. The bottle carries the line The Darker Side of Speyside, and the release was conceived as an annual edition, with the first appearing in August 2022.
The whisky spent three decades maturing in a mix of refill American oak and European oak. It was then divided and finished in three very different casks: Bordeaux wine casks, Calvados casks and Guatemalan rum-seasoned casks. The wine casks add red-fruit depth, the Calvados brings orchard-fruit brightness and the rum adds a layer of dark sweetness, all built on Mortlach's naturally weighty spirit. It is bottled at 49.1% ABV, giving it a full, mouth-coating texture. The bottle is presented in a dark, sculptural case worthy of the whisky inside.

How to Enjoy It
As the name suggests, this is a whisky for late evenings. Serve it neat in a tulip glass and let it open for several minutes before adding a drop of water. Its weight and dark fruit make it a natural partner for a full-bodied cigar or a square of dark chocolate, and its scarcity makes it a striking gift for a serious Scotch collector.
