Mount Gay Black Barrel is a small-batch Barbados rum blending pot and column still rums aged in ex-American whiskey casks, then finished in heavily charred ex-bourbon barrels, bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).
Mount Gay, in the parish of St. Lucy in northern Barbados, is known as the oldest running rum distillery in the world, with a deed dating distillation on its site to 1703; the mount was renamed in honor of Sir John Gay Alleyne. Black Barrel is crafted under Master Blender Trudiann Branker, Mount Gay's first female master blender. It blends traditional column and double retort pot still rums aged between three and seven years, with a higher proportion of pot still distillate, then finishes them for about six months in deeply charred bourbon casks for a robust, bold style.
The nose brings toasted oak, butter, dried fruit and spice. The palate is bold and aromatic with orange zest, black pepper, toasted vanilla and toffee, and the body is warm and medium with a long finish.
The gold label and heavy bottle make it a classic gift for rum lovers.
Aged rum is one of the most diverse spirits in the world, shaped by the sugarcane, the still and the warm climates where it matures, which speed up the interaction between spirit and wood.
Barbados is widely seen as the birthplace of rum.
Serve it neat in a tulip glass.
