Hell Bear is an American whiskey from Mythology Distillery in Colorado, a blend of straight rye whiskey and straight bourbons, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Mythology was founded by three friends from Colorado after a ski trip to Alaska, where they shared stories over whiskey with fellow travelers every night. That became the idea behind the brand: everyone can create their own mythology, and all you need are good friends and good whiskey. Hell Bear won a Double Gold in 2020.
The blend combines a three-year rye of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, a four-year high-rye bourbon of 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley, and a five-year wheated bourbon of 68% corn, 20% wheat and 12% malted barley. Fruit and subtle botanicals come up front, with hints of berries, then prominent rye and big cinnamon spice mid-palate, sweet cereal grain, and a smooth finish of vanilla, caramel and baking spice.
Its illustrated label makes it a fun gift.
American whiskey covers a wide range of styles, from bourbon and rye to single malts and light whiskeys, and independent blenders and small producers have made it one of the most exciting categories in spirits.
Blending rye with wheated and high-rye bourbons combines spice, softness and sweetness in one glass.
Colorado's high altitude and dry climate change how whiskey matures, often concentrating its flavors.
