Naked Diablo Extra Añejo is a small-batch tequila aged a minimum of three years in ten-year-old bourbon oak barrels and bottled at 40% ABV. It comes in Naked Diablo's distinctive heavy bottle with an embossed metal label.
Ageing in barrels that previously held well-aged bourbon gives the tequila a full-bodied, dark amber character, with the oak adding layers of caramel and vanilla to the sweetness of the blue agave. Naked Diablo produces its aged tequilas in smaller batches to keep a close eye on each one.
On the nose come caramel, vanilla and smoky agave, with blue agave sweetness, some spice and barrel oak. The palate is full-bodied, with bourbon-like richness, roasted nuts, toasted coconut and vanilla bean, plus white pepper and tropical fruit, leading to a lingering, smooth finish.
The bottle's bold metal emblem makes it stand out on any shelf, and it is a fine gift for a tequila lover who enjoys whiskey-like depth.
Enjoy it neat or on the rocks, as the producer suggests.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
