New Riff Sour Mash Single Malt is a Kentucky single malt whiskey from New Riff Distilling in Newport, made from 100% malted barley using the traditional Kentucky sour mash method, bottled at cask strength, here 113.8 proof (56.9% ABV), and non-chill filtered.
It is crafted from up to six distinct mash bills, including classic British and Scotch whisky malts, heavily smoked peated barley and heirloom varieties, distilled on a column beer still and doubler. The whiskeys are slowly matured, around seven years, in a variety of casks including new charred oak, red wine, sherry and other specialty barrels.
The result bridges the bold oak of bourbon and the cereal-driven complexity of Old World malts. Expect roasted malt, toasted oak, dark chocolate and orange peel with dried fruit, and a balance of nougat and spice.
A provocative, experimental Kentucky malt, it makes a fine gift for adventurous whiskey lovers.
Sip it neat, then add a little water.
American whiskey covers a wide range of styles, from bourbon and rye to single malts and light whiskeys, and independent blenders and small producers have made it one of the most exciting categories in spirits.
