Old Elk Sour Mash Reserve Batch No. 2 is the second batch of Old Elk's limited small-batch straight bourbon, aged more than six years and bottled at 105 proof (52.5% ABV). It comes in a black and gold presentation box.
Old Elk Distillery is a Fort Collins, Colorado operation whose master distiller, Greg Metze, is one of the most decorated distillers in American whiskey, with nearly four decades of experience. Sour Mash Reserve is a nod to the brand's start-up roots: in 2014 the team began exploring what effect a different yeast would have on Old Elk's custom high-malt mash bill of 51% corn, 34% malted barley and 15% rye. The traditional sour mash process adds a portion of previously fermented mash to each new batch to ensure consistency and develop a distinctive tangy complexity.
After more than six years of patient maturation, Greg selected thirty barrels to blend into each batch. Old Elk also proofs its whiskey slowly, taking far longer than the usual 24 to 48 hours, which lets the flavours mingle and keeps the lighter flavours in the liquid for a smoother, more balanced bourbon.
The result showcases the sturdy foundation of Old Elk's high-malt mash bill with bright and floral notes, and a long, smooth finish at 105 proof.
In its presentation box, it makes a handsome gift for bourbon lovers.
