Old Forester 100 Proof is a Kentucky straight bourbon from the first bottled bourbon, made from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).
In 1870, Old Forester became America's first bottled bourbon when founder George Garvin Brown sold his whiskey exclusively in sealed bottles to guarantee its quality. Today Old Forester is made in Louisville, and the 100 Proof bottling, with its orange accents, is a richer, bolder version of the brand's signature bourbon.
Like all Old Forester bourbons, it is made from 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malted barley. Bottled at 100 proof, it delivers a strong, sweet profile with plenty of spice.
Intense aromas of coffee, chocolate and rich butterscotch mingle with a hint of licorice on the nose. The palate brings sweet fruit and toasted oak, and the finish is long and spicy, with nutmeg, black pepper and maple.
It is excellent neat for those who enjoy a bold bourbon, or over a large ice cube to soften the spice while highlighting caramel and oak. At 100 proof it also makes an outstanding Old Fashioned or Manhattan.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
