Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye is a Kentucky straight rye drawn from one hand-selected barrel and bottled unfiltered at full barrel strength. This barrel was chosen as a private store pick and is bottled at 63.75% ABV, or 127.5 proof.
Old Forester, founded in 1870 and the longest continuously produced bourbon brand in America, makes its rye from a mash bill of 65% rye, 20% malted barley and 15% corn. The single barrel, barrel strength rye is bottled between 120 and 135 proof depending on the barrel, so every pick is a little different.
The house notes describe a dessert-forward nose of vanilla, lemon custard, caramel and brown sugar. The palate brings orchard fruit, cinnamon, dill and hazelnut, and the finish is spicy, with black pepper, anise and mint.
The classic Old Forester single barrel bottle with its green label is a fine gift for rye lovers.
At barrel strength, add water a few drops at a time to open up the fruit and spice.
American rye whiskey is made from a mash of at least 51% rye and aged in new charred oak, giving it a spicier, drier character than bourbon, with notes of pepper, herbs and baking spice.
