Old Pulteney 25 Year Old is a rare, long-aged expression of the Maritime Malt from Wick, on Scotland's far northern Caithness coast. Matured first in American oak ex-bourbon casks and then in Spanish oak ex-sherry casks, it is bottled at 46% ABV.
For a quarter of a century, the casks of this whisky breathed the sea air of the Caithness coast in the distillery's warehouses, the spirit mellowing at its own steady pace in step with the rhythm of Wick's harbour. Wick is a harbour town with a long fishing heritage, and Old Pulteney's whisky has long been tied to the sea, which is why Old Pulteney calls itself the Maritime Malt.
The cask regime gives the whisky its depth. Around 22 years in American oak lay down a spicy sweetness of vanilla, honey and fruit, and the final years in Spanish oak sherry butts add colour, richness and dark, dried-fruit notes. The nose opens with heavy spices and dark chocolate before rum-soaked raisin, lime honey, orange peel and baked apple, and the palate is built around bitter chocolate and creamy vanilla with hints of toffee, fresh lemon and coconut.
Each bottle wears Old Pulteney's distinctive silver medallion and comes in a navy blue presentation box marked Twenty Five Years Old. It is an elegant gift and a fine bottle for anyone who loves the coastal malts of northern Scotland.
