Old Soul Small Batch is a straight bourbon whiskey from Cathead Distillery in Jackson, Mississippi, a precise blend of two high-rye bourbons, non-chill filtered with no color added, bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
Old Soul is a precise blend of two whiskeys, each with an identical high-rye mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley, aged for different amounts of time. Each barrel is reviewed by nose and palate, the old-fashioned way, and expertly blended from whiskeys distilled in Indiana and Mississippi. It was developed by Cathead co-founders Richard Patrick and Austin Evans at Mississippi's first legal distillery, as a nod to bourbon traditions of the past and whiskeys to come.
Brilliant deep amber, it opens with sweet vanilla reminiscent of bakery goods and sugar cookies with a hint of fresh leather. The palate is elegant and balanced, with rose and dried cherry followed by toffee and baking spices, and rye spice and herbaceous notes appear mid-palate and carry into the finish.
The vintage cream label makes it a handsome gift.
Bourbon must be made in the United States from a mash of at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak containers, and straight bourbon must be aged at least two years. Those rules give bourbon its characteristic sweetness, with caramel and vanilla drawn from the charred barrels.
