Orphan Barrel Night Sage is a 25-year-old blended Canadian whisky, the 25th expression in Orphan Barrel's collection of rare, rediscovered whiskies. Distilled in Ontario and Manitoba and bottled at 90 proof, it takes the snowy owl as its muse.
The whisky matured for a quarter of a century in two kinds of barrel, both of which had previously held Canadian whisky: first-dump oak barrels that had been filled once before, and multi-use barrels. It was released as a single limited-edition batch, marking the brand's return to ultra-aged Canadian stocks.
Butterscotch and vanilla arrive first on the nose, followed by gently toasted oak, with almond extract, coconut macaroons and toasted pine nuts. The entry is soft and sweet, led by brown sugar and golden toffee, with walnut and fig at mid-palate and sultanas and Biscoff-like spice threading through a surprisingly nimble body. The finish brings dried fruit, vanilla and oak, with toffee and light maple emerging late.
The square bottle features a richly illustrated label of a snowy owl in a moonlit night, and it is a striking addition to any Orphan Barrel collection.
For anyone who thinks Canadian whisky is only for mixing, this 25-year-old is a delicious surprise.
