Outlaw Distillery Moonshine is a clear Utah spirit made from corn, wheat and fancy molasses, a smooth hybrid of whiskey and rum the distillery calls a Rumsky, bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV).
Outlaw Distillery was started in January 2015 in Midvale, Utah, by a diesel mechanic with an interest in distilling who built much of the distilling equipment himself, and it makes its spirits grain to glass. As the distillery points out, the federal definition of moonshine is any illegally distilled or smuggled liquor, so by definition this legal spirit is not truly a moonshine.
A more fitting name is Rumsky, a hybrid of whiskey and rum. It is made from a combination of grains, corn and wheat, together with sugar-cane products in the form of fancy molasses, which places it in the federal Specialty Other category.
The result is a deliciously mild spirit that begins with a neutral flavor similar to vodka, transitions to an inviting grain-forward flavor, and finishes with a buttery, sweet molasses note, a rollercoaster of flavors that keeps you guessing.
It makes an incredible mixer: use it in place of your usual clear spirit, whether vodka, silver rum or blanco tequila, in a Mule, a Daiquiri or a Margarita, or enjoy it as a sipping spirit to appreciate its range of flavors. It is also easy with ginger beer and lime or with lemonade over plenty of ice on a summer afternoon.
