Owney's Original New York City Rum is a white rum distilled in Brooklyn by The Noble Experiment, made from domestic molasses and proofed with New York City water, bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
The Noble Experiment was founded in 2012 by Bridget Firtle, who left a career in finance to bring rum making back to New York. The distillery's name is a tongue-in-cheek nod to Prohibition, and the rum is named for Owen Owney Madden, who made his name bootlegging and rum running up the East Coast during that era.
Owney's is made from molasses derived from domestic sugar cane and proofed with New York City's famous tap water. It is bottled unaged in a striking purple bottle embossed Original New York City Rum, and the label promises superior quality.
Owney's offers a sweet aroma of vanilla, butterscotch and banana, with a clean, lively palate and a crisp, dry finish that shows off its molasses character.
Owney's is a bartender's white rum. Shake it into a classic Daiquiri with fresh lime and simple syrup, build a Mojito with mint and soda, or mix a Cuba Libre with cola and lime. Its vanilla and banana notes are lovely in a Piña Colada or a Rum Punch, and it makes a fine base for a New York twist on the Old Cuban with Champagne and mint. Sip it chilled or over a large cube to taste its character. Pair it with Cuban sandwiches, jerk chicken, grilled pineapple or plantain chips. The purple bottle and its Prohibition backstory make Owney's a memorable gift for New Yorkers and rum fans alike.
