Padre Azul Double Barrel Reposado is a limited Artist Edition tequila, first matured for six months in an ex-bourbon American oak barrel and then for a further two months in a second ex-bourbon barrel. Only 3,000 bottles were produced, at 40% ABV.
Padre Azul is known for its sculpted skull-topped bottles, and the Artist Edition wraps this one in a vivid painting of a woman among the blue agave fields of Jalisco beneath a bright sky, crowned with the brand's signature gold skull stopper.
The nose brings summer apples, cooked agave and fruity tones. On the palate come sweet cooked agave, light caramel and oak, milk chocolate and baked apples, and the finish is round and sweet, with a lingering smoothness.
The artist bottle makes it a striking gift and a collectable display piece.
Enjoy it neat or over ice.
Reposado, meaning rested, is tequila aged between two months and a year in oak, which gives it a pale gold colour and a gentle touch of wood while keeping the agave bright and lively.
Tequila can only be made from blue Weber agave in five designated Mexican states, chiefly Jalisco, and the finest bottlings are made from 100% agave. Sipping tequila is best enjoyed from a narrow-rimmed glass that concentrates the aromas, at room temperature and without salt or lime, so the character of the agave and the barrel can come through.
