Pantera de Oro, the Golden Panther, is a cask-strength extra añejo tequila launched in 2025 by Scott Baird and Craig Demko. The inaugural Lot #1 was distilled at NOM 1608 (Los Valores), aged just over three years in a 50/50 mix of French and American oak, and bottled at 53% ABV.
Scott Baird previously helped launch Tequila Ocho and Ancho Reyes in the United States. Pantera de Oro was first planned as an añejo, but after a year in barrel the team felt it would benefit from more time in wood, and the result is a bold, full-strength extra añejo aimed at tequila connoisseurs and whiskey drinkers alike.
A rich, dark amber, it offers peanut brittle, toasted coconut and honey-sweetened coffee on the nose. The palate brings caramel pricked by cinnamon, with toasted hazelnut, coffee and vanilla, and a warmth that stays in balance. It placed second overall in one blind extra añejo tasting, with a profile closer to Armagnac and Calvados than bourbon.
The bottle with its golden panther emblem makes it a striking gift.
Taste it neat, then add a few drops of water.
Extra añejo is the most mature category of tequila, created in 2006 for tequilas aged more than three years in oak barrels of no more than 600 litres. The long rest softens the agave's natural pepper and brings out caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, which is why extra añejos are usually enjoyed neat, like a fine cognac or whisky.
