Père Magloire VSOP is a Calvados Pays d'Auge, an apple brandy from the most celebrated corner of Normandy, double distilled in pot stills and bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
Pays d'Auge ciders make up only about six percent of Normandy's production, and only they may be used for Calvados Pays d'Auge. Père Magloire double distills that cider in traditional pot stills, which gives this VSOP its exceptional richness and length on the palate, then ages it in oak until it takes on a deep golden-brown color.
The nose is floral and fruity: apple blossom, jasmine and white rose over ripe apple and apricot. The palate brings honey, vanilla and butterscotch with light oak, hazelnut and almond, and the finish lingers on candied apple, vanilla and cinnamon.
A classic Normandy pour that makes a thoughtful gift for brandy lovers.
Calvados is distilled from cider made from Normandy apples and pears.
VSOP Calvados must age at least four years in oak.
Double pot distillation gives a fuller, rounder spirit.
A drop of water opens up the floral apple blossom.
It pairs well with Camembert, apple tart or crème brûlée.
Serve it in a tulip glass to gather the aromas.
It also works as a trou normand between courses.
Try it in a hot toddy on a cold evening.
Fans of cognac will find it a fresh, fruity change.
It is a fine introduction to Normandy brandy.
Keep the bottle upright and away from light.
It is a lovely bottle to open after a long dinner.
